Ultimately, what should we view as ideal from the standpoint of a societal overview.

Equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome reinforces the ideals of Alexis de Tocqueville, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, and the Declaration of Independence. 

The ideal is equality of opportunity, rather than equality of outcome. We are all entitled to the pursuit of happiness, we are not entitled to a guarantee of happiness. IMO
