Ahhh nothing like the writings of the "great" Thomas L. Friedman to make one throat-puke.
A
thesis statement, serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in
the rest of your paper. This amazes me, that The Grey Lady allowed this
dribble to be published.
"Well,
honestly, This time is different. What is at stake in this government
shutdown forced by a radical Tea Party minority is nothing less than the
principle upon which our democracy is based: majority rule. President
Obama must not give in to this hostage taking — not just because
Obamacare is at stake, but because the future of how we govern ourselves
is at stake."
Source: Our Democracy Is at Stake
Now, how his boss, Editor in chief or Editor in day one did not catch that this man has no idea is beyond me. Let's review:
Yes,
we in the USA are democratic. But, The United States of America is a
REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A republic is a representative democracy where
the people vote for representatives to wield power in their stead. The
only pure democratic laws in the US are
the initiatives that some states have. Otherwise, the US is entirely a
republic. More specifically, a constitutional federal republic. However,
this government is operated as a representative democracy by a
congress.
The important distinction is that the USA is not operated
democratically, but rather, by representatives who come to power by
democractic process'. This was an essential and subtle fundamental of the
constitution: we are not a true democracy which could amount to mob
rule, but a representative democracy in which our leaders act in our
interests. It specifically was designed to protect the rights of the
minority.
How
can a news outlet such as the NY Times publish a man, a known lib.who
has such a fundamental factual failing. If I agree or disagree with the
following paragraphs of his article; it matters not! (Naturally, I do.) Where I went to
college, the grade was: "F".
One can simply not substantiate one's
position from a factually incorrect bedrock core position. Thus says
Cigoli.
